Celebrating Mother’s Day in Los Angeles County

Each May, we celebrate the special women in our lives including wives, mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers that have helped us become the people we are today. Motherhood is a 24/7 job without pay, vacation days, and not much recognition for the hard work it entails.

Almost a century ago, a woman had a dream of making a day specific to honoring mothers and paying tribute to the contributions they’ve made in their children’s lives.

Anna Jarvis, the pioneer of Mother’s Day, began advocating for the holiday after her own mother passed away and wanted a day to celebrate all mothers, living and dead, for the often thankless service they provide.

The first noted Mother’s Day celebration was in 1908 and the holiday was nationally recognized by President Wilson in 1914 and has been celebrated on the second Sunday of May since then. During the first celebration, Ms. Jarvis selected white carnation as the flower of choice as it was her mother’s favorite and giving out carnations has stayed a tradition, though many florists offer a variety of other options for this holiday.

No matter if you’re celebrating with a card, flowers, or taking your mother to brunch, be sure to let your mother know how appreciated she is.

From all of us at Pacific Palms Resort, we wish you and yours a happy Mother’s Day!
