New Year, new you
New Year, new you Images
Are you resolving to focus on your overall health this year? We put together some ideas for health-based New Year’s resolutions, from exercise to rewarding yourself with invigorating spa treatments, and some tips to sticking with them!
Start with a clean slate… or plate
Get a jumpstart on spring cleaning and remove unhealthy snacks and drinks from your home and office and replacing them with healthy alternatives.
Tip: Swap out your three o’clock candy bar with some almonds and fruit or jerky to give you the energy you need to finish your day without weighing you down.
Take care of your body
Many resolutions revolve around our bodies and the changes we can make to them but we encourage you to resolve to take care of the one you have right now. Regular massage has a ton of health benefits such as improved circulation, better flexibility with relaxed muscles, and a stronger immune system.
Tip: Sign up for a spa membership or set monthly appointments to reward your body and keep it in tip-top condition. Can you really say no to monthly massages?
Make exercise fun
Most people hit the gym hard the first few weeks of the New Year, but that doesn’t often work well as we get burned out from the gym. Resolve to find fun ways to add exercise and fitness into your week. Perhaps you join a gym that offers a variety of classes during the week to change it up or schedule an appointment with a personal trainer to learn new techniques to refine your workout.
Tip: Make it a habit, not a chore. A lot of times, we give up on working out or going to the gym because it takes away time from other activities or seems like a chore to get activity in during the day. By treating it like a lifestyle change or making it just another part of your routine, you’ll be more apt to stick with it and think of it in a positive light.
Love the skin you’re in
Though we’re moving into a new year, you can keep your youthful appearance and healthy skin with regular facials and body treatments. Resolve to book at least two skin appointments each year to rejuvenate and revitalize your biggest organ.
Tip: Find a spa membership that includes facials and other signature treatments as part of your monthly subscription.
Treat food as fuel
Don’t go for the standard resolution of cutting calories or restricting your diet but instead think about the nutritional value of what you’re putting on your plate and how your body will use that as energy. Don’t subtract from your plate but add more veggies, lean proteins, and healthy fats to your meals to properly fuel your body as you work on achieving the rest of your resolutions.
Tip: Take a day off once a week and cheat on your diet! Not only is this good mentally as it allows you to eat the foods you’re craving and feel good really good about but it also tells your body you’re eating plenty of calories and fat and it’s time to rev up your metabolism.
Try new things
Resolve to let new experiences in your life or try things outside of your comfort zone. Trying new things can build your confidence and you never know, you may fall in love with a new hobby that brings happiness into your daily routine.
Tip: A favorite way to try something new is with a new ‘do! Visit a salon or stylist and change up your hairstyle with a new color, new cut, or new product.
It’s an inevitable fact: We all face stress in our lives. But if we don’t take steps to addressing it or reducing it, we can be facing much worse in the form of depression, insomnia, and heart disease. Resolve to identify stressful situations or things and how to deal with them or eliminate them.
Tip: Find a healthy outlet for your stress, whether that’s socializing with friends, catching up on some much needed sleep, taking a vacation, or planning a day of pampering and relaxation.
Resolve to be present and in the now with friends, family, and at work. We live in such a connected world that it can be hard to not multitask and do six things at once but it’s important for you and those you’re with to be present and participating.
Tip: Find a way to eliminate distractions from social hours or meetings by leaving your phone behind or turning it off. Alternatively, you may practice mindfulness with a morning or evening meditation to reset and reconnect with yourself.
Of course an important tip for all of these resolutions is to remember that most of these are marathon goals, not sprints. We live in a world of immediate results and forget that New Year’s resolutions are designed for the whole year, not just a week from now. Focus on the long-term commitment and success that will come instead of wanting overnight results and being discouraged from your resolution.
